Bajofondo
Even though Bajofondo has been a pioneer in what has been known all over the world as "electronica tango", the group doesn't consider that this definition is appropriate for their music. It's been already five years since Gustavo Santaolalla conceived this project along with Juan Campodónico, with the idea of bringing together a collective of Argentine and Uruguayan artists dedicated to creating "contemporary music of the Rio de la Plata". The project, which appeared under the name Bajofondo Tango Club, initially was an alliance of producers, musicians and singers that
took shape in the recording studio, and the release of their first album was the culmination of this process. With the passage of time and the multiple tours, this collective of artists with remarkable individual careers evolved becoming a true band, whose live performances are an amazing sensation all over the world. And as Bajofondo's music grows, evolves and expands, the denomination of "electronica tango" becomes more and more inadequate. Gustavo Santaolalla has a very concrete explanation for this: "we don't like the label of "electronica tango", because we don't consider what we do to be either tango nor electronica.
We believe we do music of the Rio de la Plata, and if you want to create a music that represents today's sound of places like Buenos Aires and Montevideo –at least in our view-, obviously genres such as tango, murga, milonga and candombe are going to be present, because they are part of the genetic-musical map of that part of the world. But the 40 years history of Argentine and Uruguayan rock, hip hop and electronica also are part of that map and the history of that place".
Supervielle
When it comes to music, what's real and what's imaginary? Is Rêverie a studio album that sounds live, or a live show that sounds like a studio recording? Asking those questions is as useful as trying to find the exact point where the Río de la Plata becomes the Atlantic Ocean. Who cares?! Just enjoy the river...
If you thought Supervielle's sophomore album would in any way sound similar to his gorgeous debut, think again: No samples here. Instead, you hear the pure excitement of people playing their instruments live, flowing in the womb of that unique and eclectic sound that is more Bajofondo than tango. If Piazzolla and hip-hop were the backbone of the first album, now you have a young artist mastering the art of finding – and creating – beauty in that place Franny Glass talks about in "Adonde van los pájaros" (the line "We're lost between the city/and our anxiety" and the illuminated darkness feel of the album would make Serge Gainsbourg proud.)
The other pillars of the album are the subtle impressionism references in Supervielle's piano, and the melodic sense and rock-pop attitude of
Argentine icon Charly García (in his late '70s to mid-'80s era). Besides García's classic "No soy un extraño", the other few covers are completely reinvented.
"Canción de muchacho", using the original vocal track of a young Eduardo Darnauchans, chillingly brings back the voice of a great, late Uruguayan that is equal parts Dylan and medieval troubadour, in a vinyl-friendly approach that nevertheless looks ahead and makes the song explode into a whole new trip; "Gritar", a Uruguayan rock classic from the '80s, borrows original singer Gabriel Peluffo (who popularized the song with Los Estómagos in 1985, and who has been the frontman of the highly popular Buitres since 1989) in a rousing version that transcends decades; and "Indios", the unforgettable hymn by the mythic Brazilian rock band Legião Urbana, gets the dance- floor treatment with the dead-on delivery of newcomer Luisa Pereira and Dado Villa- Lobos, LU's original guitarist, showing the album's amazing stylistic range.
But, if you ask me, it is the brief and sublime "Un poco a lo Felisberto" that holds everything together.
Felisberto Hernández (1902-1964), perhaps Uruguay's most influential – and least known – fantastic writer, earned his living as a silent movie piano player but also gave original concerts before concentrating on his short stories and novels. García Márquez and Cortázar, among others, have cited him as an inspiration.
"I think my specialty is to write what I don't know, because I don't believe you should only write about what you know", Hernández once said. "I'm seduced by certain disorder I find in reality and in the aspects of its mysteries. That's where my philosophy and art are found".
Montevideo isn't Macondo, and Supervielle isn't trying to put music to magical realism. What he does on Rêverie is magic. But it is also real.

Info
CAMPO is a musical project created by musician and producer Juan Campodonico.
The project mixes indie pop, electro, folk and rock with tango, cumbia and 50´s and 60's latin music, blending them into an updated and sophisticated pop context, with tracks performed in both English and Spanish.
CAMPO define their style as "Subtropical Music". The term marks an ironic way of setting the differences with tropical music and also makes nods to other genres such as cumbia villera, the urban sound born and bred in the marginal neighborhoods of Argentina and Uruguay.
CAMPO is built upon the instrumental spine of Bajofondo's musicians – the musical ensemble from Rio de la Plata, created by Campodonico and Gustavo Santaolalla – and a group of composers and performers from different genres and different locations such as songwriter Martin Rivero, Swedish singer Ellen Arkbro, composer and MC Santullo, electronic musician Pablo Bonilla. The album also features a special collaboration with Jorge Drexler.
CAMPO's debut album will be released in 2011. It was produced by Campodonico himself alongside iconic producer and two-time Academy Award winner for Best Original Score Gustavo Santaolalla (Brokeback Mountain and Babel) with Joe Chiccarelli, sound engineer of The Strokes, The Shins and The White Stripes, among other artists.
